Want to change and need some help? Hypnotherapy can help you to change your limiting beliefs and behaviours. Boost confidence, stop smoking, lose weight or get rid of your fears and phobias.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis can be defined as 'an altered state of consciousness' or a 'state of deep relaxation'. When someone is hypnotised they are more open to suggestion than under normal circumstances as there is direct access to the subconscious mind. Under hypnosis, a deep state of relaxation is achieved through focused attention. Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis to bring about therapeutic change and personal well-being (e.g. it may be used to help someone give up smoking or reduce stress-related inflammatory conditions such as asthma)

While in this trance-like state, the unconscious mind is highly receptive to new perspectives and ideas. The use of imagery and positive suggestions at this time can help a client imagine and actually experience herself in the future, as she desires to be. This makes the changes she wants in her life happen much faster and with less resistance.

What happens during a visit to the hypnotherapist?

During your first visit to a hypnotherapist, he or she will ask you questions about your medical history and what brought you to see them in other words, what condition it is that you would like to clear up. The specialist will then explain to you what hypnosis is and how it works. You will then be directed through relaxation techniques with a series of mental images and suggestions intended to change behaviours and alleviate symptoms. For example, people who suffer from panic attacks may be given the suggestion that, in the future, they will be able to relax at will. The hypnotherapist will also teach you the basics of self-hypnosis for you to practice at home.
